Steve Schmidt is an American campaign strategist and public relations worker for the U.S. Republican Party. He specializes in political message development and strategy. He was the senior campaign strategist for the 2008 presidential campaign of Senator John McCain. Mr. Schmidt worked as the campaign manager for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's successful 2006 re-election bid.

Mr. Schmidt is a native of North Plainfield, N.J., the son of a school teacher and a business executive. He and his wife, Angela, have two children.

A long-time Republican political strategist, Steve Schmidt joined John McCain’s presidential campaign in January 2008, helping lead the candidate to an improbable comeback win in the Republican primaries. "The New York Times" credited Mr. Schmidt with transforming McCain into “an elbows out, disciplined, risk-taking machine.” Previously, Mr. Schmidt served as a top advisor to President George W. Bush and was campaign manager for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 2006 reelection campaign.
