Carlotta Walls LaNier was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1942, and she graduated from Central High School in 1960 as part of the Little Rock Nine. She then attended Michigan State University and graduated from Colorado State College-now the University of Northern Colorado, on whose board of trustees she sits. After working for the YWCA, she founded her own real estate brokerage firm, LaNier and Company. A sought-after lecturer, LaNier speaks across the country, and she has received the Congressional Gold Medal and two honorary doctorate degrees. She is the mother of two children, Whitney and Brooke, and lives in Englewood, Colorado with her husband, Ira.

Carlotta Walls LaNier, a member of the Little Rock Nine, discusses her book, "A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School," which chronicles her experiences during the 1957 desegregation crisis that became a major moment in the Civil Rights Movement. One of the nine black students to integrate the all-white high school, LaNier offers a first person account of the crisis and the effect it has had on her life.
